How Long Does It Take to Run a 5K?
A 5K is 3.11 miles. At a 12 minute mile, which is a comfortable jog for a lot of beginners, that works out to 37 minutes and 17 seconds. Your own number comes down to one thing: the pace you can hold for the whole distance.
Short answer
Most beginners run a 5K in 30 to 45 minutes. The largest published analysis of race results puts the average 5K pace at 7:04 per kilometer for men and 8:18 per kilometer for women, which works out to finish times of about 35:20 and 41:30. Walking a 5K usually takes 45 to 60 minutes.
The short version
- 5K is 3.11 miles, or 12 and a half laps of a standard track.
- Finish time is just pace multiplied by 3.11. Nothing else affects it.
- A 12 minute mile pace produces a 37:17 finish.
- Average race times run slower than people expect, because most finishers are beginners.

What the race data actually says
RunRepeat, working with the IAAF, analyzed 107.9 million race results from 70,000 events between 1986 and 2018. It remains the largest published study of finish times.
| Pace per km | Pace per mile | 5K finish | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Men | 7:04 | 11:22 | 35:20 |
| Women | 8:18 | 13:21 | 41:30 |

Read those numbers carefully
The study covers people who signed up for a race, and it excluded walks, charity events, and elite runners. It also stops at 2018. So treat it as a solid picture of who shows up to race a 5K, not a measurement of everyone who runs one.
The useful takeaway is that average finish times are slower than most beginners assume. 5K is the entry distance, so the field is full of first-timers. Finishing anywhere in the 30s puts you in ordinary company.
How long does it take to walk a 5K?
A brisk walk is roughly 3.0 to 3.5 mph, which puts a 5K between 53 and 62 minutes. Walk faster, around 4 mph, and you are closer to 47 minutes.
| Walking speed | 5K time |
|---|---|
| 2.5 mph (easy stroll) | 1:14:34 |
| 3.0 mph (steady) | 1:02:08 |
| 3.5 mph (brisk) | 53:16 |
| 4.0 mph (fast walk) | 46:36 |

Plenty of people finish their first 5K with walk breaks in it, and a planned run/walk pattern often produces a faster time than starting hard and fading. Here is how that works.
What changes your time on the day
- Starting too fast. The most common and most expensive mistake. Adrenaline makes your normal pace feel easy for about four minutes, then it does not.
- Hills. A rolling course can add a minute or two over 5K compared to a flat one.
- Heat. Running in real heat slows most people down noticeably, and effort is a better guide than the clock on those days.
- Crowds. In a big field the first half kilometer is often slower than you planned, and that is fine.
How to get faster
Almost nobody gets faster by running hard more often. They get faster by running easy more consistently, then adding one slightly harder session once the easy runs are routine.
- 1Run three times a week for a month. Consistency first. Three days is the beginner number.
- 2Keep two of those runs conversational. If you cannot say a full sentence out loud, ease off.
- 3Let one session get longer each week. Time on your feet is what moves a 5K time.
- 4Only then add speed. Short faster intervals, once a week, after a couple of months of consistent running.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to run a 5K for a beginner?
Most beginners finish in 30 to 45 minutes. A 12 minute mile pace, which many beginners can hold, produces a 37:17 finish.
Is a 30 minute 5K good?
It is a solid beginner benchmark. A 30 minute 5K means holding 9:39 per mile or 6:00 per kilometer, which is faster than the average finish time reported in the largest published study of race results.
How long does it take to walk a 5K?
Between about 47 minutes at a fast 4 mph walk and just over an hour at a steady 3 mph. A brisk 3.5 mph walk covers it in roughly 53 minutes.
How many miles is a 5K?
3.1069 miles, usually written as 3.1. More on the conversion here.
